Hiking to the top of a 14er.
There are 54 fourteeners scattered across the state of Colorado. These massive peaks have been added to the bucket list for many outdoor enthusiasts like myself. I’ve compiled 10 tips to help prepare you to safely and successfully summit your first Colorado 14er.
10 Tips for Hiking your first Colorado 14er.
1. Chose a 14er.
Start small and work your way to harder peaks later. Remember – there’s no such thing as an easy 14er, just some easier than others. I recommend checking out www.14ers.com for detailed information on all of the Colorado 14er peaks. Fourteeners range in difficulty from Class 1 (trail hiking) to Class 5 (technical climbing). Select a mountain based on your skill level.
2. Train for the mountain.
These trails are tough, you cant just walk right up and climb to the summit without any physical training. I have a blog post to help you physically prepare for your first 14er summit. (here)
3. Acclimate to the altitude.
The air is much thinner and breathing can be a challenge. Altitude sickness can hit you quick and hard.
4. Monitor the weather forecast.
The weather changes quick at high altitudes – lightning danger is a real concern at 14,000 feet. Most inclement weather comes in the early afternoon so plan to get an early start and aim to be back below tree line by 12 noon. Re-schedule if the weather isn’t favorable.
5. Research Trailhead and location.
Some trailheads are rugged dirt roads that aren’t maintained. You may need 4WD vehicle with decent clearance. Other trailheads are normal roads that most vehicles can handle.
6. Set your alarm.
Get an early start to avoid inclement weather (and crowds) which typically roll in early afternoon. Check route distance and have an idea of how long it will take you to get to the summit and back down.
7. Get packed.
Pack your daypack (See my blogpost here for packing for a 14er here https://adventurewithjen.com/?p=232. Grab snacks, water & necessities beforehand. Not many stores or breakfast locations will be open at 4 am so plan ahead.
8. Lay out your Gear.
Prepare for cooler temperatures and layer. Have appropriate shoes and equipment. The weather can change rapidly, so layering is crucial. I’ve seen sun, snow, clouds and rain all in one 14er hike and not to mention the wicked wind you’ll have at the top.
9. Take it Slow.
Slow down and enjoy the hike. Take breaks when you need them. A slower pace will help you control your breathing while still making progress to the summit.
10. A Brew for the View and a Sign for the Summit.
Obviously these last two tips are purely optional, but a fun way to celebrate the summit. I like to take a local beer to the top if I can find one – crack it open, take in the view and be thankful you are blessed enough to be standing on the peak. A fancy schmancy cardboard sign will help you document that memory you just made. Check out my instagram for 14er sign inspo (and see below as well). http://www.instagram.com/adventure.with.jen/
